Ombudsman investigation into release of personal information in error
The Ombudsman undertook an investigation into the release of personal information in error by public authorities implementing decisions on assessed disclosure applications under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Tas) (RTI Act).
He found that errors were frequently occurring and that this systemic issue must be addressed by public authorities to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to prevent the unjustifiable disclosure of personal information during the right to information process. The Ombudsman made five recommendations to all public authorities fully subject to the RTI Act in his investigation report released in March 2026 (PDF, 290.5 KB).

Guidelines
The Ombudsman is required by section 49(1) of the RTI Act to issue and maintain guidelines relating to certain aspects of the RTI Act. He is also given power by section 49(1) to issue guidelines on any matters which he considers necessary.
