Electricity metering

Electricity Metering

On 1 December 2017 metering contestability was introduced into the Tasmanian electricity market, together with a number of other Australian jurisdictions.

From this date, retailers assumed responsibility for all new metering installations, taking over from TasNetworks who remains responsible for metering installed prior to 1 December 2017.

Aurora Energy, through its Metering Coordinator, Metering Dynamics, is responsible for metering installed for new connections and TasNetworks aged metering program.  This will involve the installation of Type 4 or Type 4A advanced meters.  Type 4 meters are communications enabled and will be remotely read.  A customer can opt out of a Type 4 meter in favour of a Type 4A meter that does not have communications and will need to be physically read each quarter.  It is not possible to change from a Type 4 to a Type 4A meter after installation.

Commencing in early 2019, Aurora Energy will roll-out advanced meters to replace Aurora Pay As You Go meters.  Advanced meters will also be installed for customers who request these meters due to access issues such as a dog on the property or the meter is located within a residence.

Over a five to ten year period, all meters will be replaced with advanced metering and TasNetworks will no longer have any responsibility for the installation or reading of electricity meters.
